As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2019, we are highlighting the impact of Apprenticeships by participating in the #AskAnApprentice initiative. We have asked learners who are currently on our Apprenticeship Programme to answer key questions, in hope that we can inspire the prospective learners to kick-start their career.
Today we have featured Umera, who is currently completing her Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship with us at GFT.
Who or what inspired you to complete an Apprenticeship?
For me personally, completing an apprenticeship was better suited to me than going to University. The idea of potentially securing a job after the completion of my apprenticeship was enticing. I also knew of many managers and business owners who had, instead of going to University, completed an apprenticeship instead. These concepts are what inspired me to complete an apprenticeship.
What do you enjoy the most about your role and why?
I enjoy that my role consists of a wide range of dissimilar duties and not just the same thing every day. Some of my duties include but are not limited to: getting companies on board, interviewing, matching the correct candidate to the correct vacancy, advertising our commercial courses, signing up candidates at their placements.
How do you think an Apprenticeship has improved or opened up your career options?
An apprenticeship has provided me with essential skills, experience and qualifications that I am able to transfer wherever I go. An apprenticeship has also opened up a lot of career options for me, made me a lot more employable and has made me stand out to employers compared with someone who simply has a qualification.
What advice would you give to other people considering an apprenticeship as a route into employment?
The advice I would you give to other people considering an apprenticeship as a route into employment is to definitely go for it. There are so many benefits such as receiving a renowned qualification, essential work experience, transferable skills, the potential of a secured job, a wage and most importantly and increase in confidence. There is also a good chance of progression into team leader and management roles.
What do you think is the biggest benefit of completing an Apprenticeship?
The biggest benefit of an apprenticeship is financial stability. If I was to go to university then I would have had a debt of over £27,000, no experience and simply a degree. However, as I’m doing an apprenticeship I am debt free, earning a wage and saving money for my future. I don’t have to worry about finding a job or worry about how much of my earning is going towards a debt.
