Starting a new job or your first ever job can seem quite daunting, and feeling like this is completely normal. Below we have outlined a few expectations so that you have the heads up before you start!
Firstly, it's important to remember that everyone at some point in their life is going to have to experience a first day. Whether this be at school, college or a new job - everyone has to do it. It is however understandable that these situations can seem quite uncomfortable, and it is often the fear of the unknown that makes us nervous.
To calm those initial nerves, we recommend focusing on preparation. A good way to start is by planning for your first day in advance. Things you may want to consider planning could be: what you want to wear, how you are going to arrive on time and potentially what equipment or supplies you need to have.
Majority of new starters are mainly worried about the other people who work there and whether they will fit into the employee culture. In most cases, on your first day you will be introduced to your team and other employees. Remember, good work relationships often come naturally and once you are settled in and become familiar with everyone you may find more confidence to get to know people.
In regards to fulfilling the role, no one is going to expect you to get everything 100% right on the first day. In fact, most companies will often treat your first day or first week as an introductory period where they can provide further training and support to help you settle in. As long as you remain positive and show willingness to learn, you will be on track to impressing your new employer.
We wish you the best of luck! If you would like further information, advice or guidance from our Careers Team to help you prepare for your first day, submit an enquiry here.
